The federal government is funding two Richmond-based projects as part of its push to accelerate the development of offshore wind power.
The Richmond-unit of Alstom Power received $4.1 million to develop a new turbine control system. The company has a turbine engineering and manufacturing center in Chesterfield near Willis Road and Jefferson Davis Highway.
Alstom Power is owned by the French multinational power and transportation company Alstom. The company has been in Chesterfield since the 1970s.
Dominion also received a $500,000 grant to research a hypothetical 600-megawatt offshore wind project.
The funds are part of $43 million awarded by the Department of Energy to 41 projects across the country in an effort to advance offshore energy production.

The use of wind power just does not make financial or environmental sense. To gain a sense of perspective on wind power read today’s article in the Richmond Times Dispatch at:

Government funding for wind power is just another example of what sounds great in theory but not in practice. It is no wonder we have the deficits we do with so much government spending and waste. Common sense is no longer common.
Sierra Club Falls of the James group is meeting tomorrow night, 7 pm, at Science Museum of Virginia with the topics of wind power and clean energy.
Hope to see you there.
Molycorp (MCP) says it’s making a significant investment in privately held Boulder Wind Power, which designs a rare earth magnet-powered wind turbine generator that produces electricity for as low as $0.04 per kilowatt-hour.
