Pet supply company is bullish on expansion

bestbullywarehouseA fast-growing Richmond pet supply company has bought a warehouse a mile from its old facility behind Virginia Commonwealth University.

Best Bully’s, which manufactures all-natural dog treats and distributes thousands of other products, paid $700,000 for a 25,000-square-foot warehouse on Admiral Street near the campus of Virginia Union.

The company has about 25 full-time workers and mails between 500 and 1,000 orders a day to customers who buy pet treats from their website.

“It’s close to our other location and still urban, which we like, because it’s close to students from VCU and centrally located,” founder Avrum Elmakis said.

Elmakis said the new warehouse, which is one floor, will let the company more easily fulfill orders. His old warehouse was three floors and is slated to be turned into apartments.

“This also gives us the ability to use forklifts,” Elmakis said.

The building has one other virtue that attracted the company: a rooftop visible from the interstate.

Best Bully has two new signs that advertise the brand to motorists along Interstate 95.

“There are 45 million passengers along this route each year,” Elmakis said. “We wanted to show Richmond we are here and pick up new consumers through repetitive advertising.”
