Smoking articles and method for treating tobacco material with a suspension containing bismuth containing compounds and optionally glycerin
Patent 8,176,923
Provided is a method for reducing TPM cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, and/or phenolic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the particulate phase of mainstream smoke. Also provided is a smoking article including tobacco material treated with a bismuth containing compound and optionally glycerin. The method includes forming a suspension of a bismuth containing compound, water, and optionally glycerin. Tobacco material is contacted with the suspension, and then dried to evaporate the water. The tobacco material is used to form smoking articles with potentially reduced TPM cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, and/or targeted constituents in mainstream smoke.
Inventors: Lixin Xue (Midlothian); W. Geoffrey Chan (Chesterfield)

Wavelength separating beamsplitter
Patent 8,184,375
A prism system is disclosed for splitting a broadband incoming light beam. In one embodiment, the broadband beam enters the prism system and is shifted laterally through a parallelogram shaped prism. The beam then encounters a first dichroic coating treated surface. The light that is reflected off of the surface strikes the internal wall of the prism to undergo total internal reflection within the prism. The beam exits the prism parallel to the original incoming broadband beam. The beam that passes through the dichroic surface reaches a second dichroic coating treated surface where a specified waveband of light is reflected while the remaining wavelengths pass through. The beam reflected by the second dichroic surface undergoes a total internal reflection and exits parallel to the incoming broadband beam. The light beam which passes through the second dichroic surface exits the prism parallel to the original incoming broadband beam.

Method and apparatus for the production of high tenacity polyolefin sheet
Patent 8,177,540
A process for the production of virtually full density polyolefin suitable for further processing by drawing to form a high tenacity, highly oriented polyolefin sheet comprising: a) feeding a metered amount of polyolefin powder into the nip between two heated calender rolls; b) rolling the powder through the nip under these conditions until a coherent sheet of polyolefin is produced. According to a highly preferred embodiment, initially, the nip is set at a gap smaller than the size of the smallest polyolefin powder particle and at a temperature above the melting point of the powder and once a coherent sheet of polyolefin exits the nip the temperature in the nip is lowered to a temperature below the melting point of the polyolefin powder and the gap increased to a desired level above the thickness of the largest powder particle.

System, method and computer program product for an interactive business services price determination and/or comparison model
Patent 8,180,710
A system, method, and computer program product are disclosed for determining a standard market pricing index for pricing user-defined business services and for comparing unique configurations of business services to the determined market pricing index and/or to other unique configurations of business services. Portions of the disclosed system, method, and/or computer program product describe a model and user interface for performing standard, objective, repeatable, and directly comparable benchmarking of business services. In general, the computerized model compiles a set of market price data and interprets specific configurations and characteristics from the market data set. The model performs a periodic analysis to determine which configurations and/or characteristics are the most common within the data set, yielding a common market configuration. The model further performs an iterative process in which all the data within the data set is normalized and adjusted to the common market configuration of similar business services. A user enters a user-defined services data set into the model, in the form of answers to questions through a user-interface, and upon running the model, receives a report indicating a likely market price for such services.
