Mechanicsville is getting a little more intimate.
The lingerie and adult products company Adam & Eve is opening its first Virginia retail store on Saturday in the Bowles Farm Plaza shopping center at 7500 Jackson Arch Drive.
Chad Jenny, a spokesman for Adam & Eve, said the store’s focus would be on intimate apparel.
“Most of the floor area will be dedicated to soft products, such as lingerie, costumes –things like that,” Jenny said. “We’ll have a back area for pleasure products. There will be no DVDs in this location.”
Jenny said Adam & Eve, headquartered in Carrboro, N.C., is known for its online presence but takes a different approach to its brick-and-mortar operations.
“If you go on to our website, it’s a lot more hardcore, because, you know, it’s the Internet,” he said. “Our stores are a lot different. We want our stores to be on Main Street of every town in America. It’s a lot softer, female-friendly.”
Adam & Eve is occupying 3,200 square feet in the center, said Susan Jones, a broker with Colliers International who represents the property.
“The lease was signed in October, but we gave them plenty of time to do their build-out and get their permits,” Jones said.
The 28,400-square-foot center has three vacant storefronts totaling 8,800 square feet. Rent in the center averages $14.50 per square foot per year, according to a Colliers flier.
This will be Adam & Eve’s 49th storefront and is run by a franchisee called Specialty Retail LLC, which is headed by Ben Woodard.
Woodard, a real estate agent by day, said he decided to get into the business when his business partner (unnamed) visited a store in North Carolina.
“He said the vibe of the store was just different from other adult stores,” Woodard said. “The staff was very knowledgeable and it felt more comfortable. We actually like to call it an intimacy boutique, more than an adult store.”
Woodard said he took possession of the property in December and that the build out cost between $75,000 and $85,000. To kick things off, the store has been running print and radio advertisements.
Adam & Eve’s arrival here is another sign that the adults products business is heating up in the Richmond area.
Pricilla McCall’s now has stores in Midlothian and Colonial Heights and on West Broad Street near Willow Lawn. Taboo, at West Broad Street and West Club Lane, is expanding to Midlothian.
