System and methods for providing starter credit card accounts
Patent 8,407,136
A system and method for providing starter credit card products to selected customers of a credit card issuer is disclosed. Methods, systems and articles of manufacture consistent with the present invention enable a credit card issuer to identify a group of customers that may not eligible to obtain standard credit card products offered by the credit card issuer. The credit card issuer may rank these customers and present offers for starter credit card accounts with adjusted account parameters tailored to these customers. The credit card issuer monitors the activities of each starter card account during a trial period to determine whether each respective account has met predetermined criteria. Based on the results of the monitor process, the credit card issuer may adjust the parameters associated with each starter credit card account. The adjustment may include increasing a credit limit of the starter credit card account if the predetermined criteria has been met, or conversely, restarting the trial period if an account has not met the predetermined criteria during the trial period. Once a starter card account that meets selected criteria during the trial period will graduate and receive new parameters and benefits defined by the credit card issuer.

Nanoparticle catalyst compounds and/or volatile organometallic compounds and method of using the same for biomass gasification
Patent 8,404,155
A nanocatalyst, dual catalyst and methods for improving the efficiency and output of a biomass gasification process are provided where the catalysts comprise a volatile organometallic compound(s) and/or a nanoalloy catalyst. By the catalyst and method, a very high biomass gasification conversion efficiency of over 85% can be achieved. The subject nanocatalyst cracks and gasifies lignin, which is generally inert in conventional gasification, at relatively low gasification temperatures. The subject disclosure also provides a means to increase gas yields and lower lignin content in the resulting product relative to conventional gasification. Alternatively, oil production may be increased, if desired. Moreover, the resulting gas may achieve a Fischer-Tropsch reactor favorable H.sub.2:CO ratio of about 9:1. The energy input to the gasification is correspondingly reduced to reduce costs and the environmental impact associated with the gasification process.

Contact lenses for extended release of bioactive agents containing diffusion attenuators
Patent 8,404,265
An appliance for the delivery of at least one bioactive agent to the eye has at least one diffusion attenuator within a hydrophilic or silicone-hydrogel contact lens. The bioactive agent can be a drug or a nutraceutical. The diffusion attenuator can be a plurality of solid particles or phase separated liquid aggregates within at least one continuous phase of the lens where the diffusion attenuators promote a tortuous path for the diffusion of the bioactive agent to mediate the rate by which the bioactive agent diffuses from the contact lens. The diffusion attenuator can be homogeneously dispersed throughout at least one continuous phase of the lens to modify the diffusivity of the bioactive agent through that phase. The diffusion attenuator can have little or no affinity for the bioactive agent or can be miscible with the bioactive agent. The diffusion attenuator can be incorporated while forming the contact lens by polymerization of a monomer mixture containing the diffusion attenuator. For liquid diffusion attenuators, the liquid can be co-absorbed with a solvent into the lens followed by removal of the solvent, where the bioactive agent can be co-absorbed or subsequently absorbed after the loading of the diffusion attenuator. The diffusion attenuator can be Vitamin E.

Unified messaging system using web based application server for management of messages using standardized servers
Patent 8,407,294
A unified web-based voice messaging system uses an application server, configured for executing a voice application defined by XML documents, that accesses subscriber attributes from a standardized information database server (such as LDAP), and messages from a standardized messaging server (such as IMAP), regardless of message format. The application server, upon receiving a request from a browser serving a user, accesses the standardized database server to obtain attribute information for responding to the voice application operation request. The application server generates an HTML document having media content and control tags for personalized execution of the voice application operation based on the attribute information obtained from the standardized database server. The application server also is configured for storing messages for a called party in the standardized messaging server by storing within the message format information that specifies the corresponding message format. Hence, the application server can respond to a request for a stored message from a subscriber by accessing the stored message from the standardized messaging server, and generating an HTML document having media content and control tags for presenting the subscriber with the stored message in a prescribed format based on the message format and the capabilities of the access device used by the subscriber.
