Another chain restaurant wants a piece of VCU.
Noodles & Company is building out a new Richmond location at 814 W. Grace St., in the heart of VCU country. It signed a lease on the space earlier this year.
The 6,500 square-foot-space previously housed Xscape Lounge and is nextdoor to a Chipotle. Renovations are underway and Lakeview Construction is the general contractor.
In addition to the Chipotle, the restaurant will compete with several chains on the same block including Panera, IHOP, Croutons, and Raising Cane’s.
It’ll be Noodles & Company’s fourth Richmond location. It has storefronts in Mechanicsville, Westchester Commons in Midlothian and in Willow Lawn.
The chain was founded in Denver in 1995. It now has more than 300 stores in 25 states, including both corporate-owned and franchised locations. It has 25 locations in Virginia, mostly in Northern Virginia.
It’s also in the midst of planning an IPO.

No mention of the Biograph Theater?
It’s amazing to me how VCU’s expansion is wiping away Richmond’s recent cultural history.
I agree. While it’s undeniable that VCU’s expansion has had a lot very positive side effects, I believe that they need to refocus on historic preservation instead of bulldozing. Go to http://vintagerva.blogspot.com/search/label/VCU to see several more sad examples.
