For adult novelty chain, it’s Taboo à trois

Alison Barber is betting that if two is good, three is better.

Her local adult store Taboo is expanding to a third location after opening its second store in April.

Taboo will open Monday at 10607 Patterson Ave. The 1,200-square-foot space is near the intersection with Pump Road in the Far West End and previously housed Prime Time Video.

“My options as far as space in Henrico goes are kind of limited because of zoning, so I was happy to find out that there was space available,” Barber said. “It kind of fell into my lap.”

Barber, a VCU graduate, bought the business in 2002 when it had only one store at 6021 W. Broad St.

She bought an adult bookstore in June 2012 at 5100 Midlothian Turnpike. After a year of renovations, the second store opened in April.

Renovations at the Patterson Avenue store took less time, she said. Barber worked with River Road Remodeling on the two-week project. She would not say how much she spent on it.

Barber said the Patterson Avenue location would carry more toys and movies and less lingerie than the other two locations.

“As far as business goes, there is always more room for Taboo,” Barber said. “There isn’t a ton of options for adult friendly stores … so I definitely don’t feel like I’m over-saturating.”

I was excited to hear about the new store closer to the west end. After hearing there will not be a large selection of lingerie, I no longer care..

Jay –
Sarcasm doesn’t translate well to the internet, so I’m not entirely sure if you’re being serious or not, but if you are, you should know that we can always special order lingerie for you, and we love taking customer suggestions for items they’d like to see more of in our stores!

I believe the French phrase is spelled “à trois,” not “à trios.”
