CIOs-for-hire take their show on the road

Under new ownership, a local tech firm is heading south.

B2B Solutions opened a second office in Raleigh, N.C. last month.

The company specializes in database and IT services for firms that cannot afford their own IT divisions and offers a CIO-for-hire service. B2B can do most of these tasks remotely, but President and CEO Greg Samuels hopes a local presence will help the company attract clients in the Raleigh market.

“I think the key for us is being part of the Raleigh community,” he said. “One thing you can’t compete against is when someone says ‘Well why send your money up to Virginia when there’s a great local company here that can help you.’”

Samuels bought B2B, headquartered on Westerre Parkway in Henrico County, from company founder Dave Klein in May. The Raleigh move came together in the last two months, though Samuels said he and Klein had discussions about a second office before the sale. Samuels thought pointing south was the best plan.

“I think for us going south makes more sense than to jump up into [Northern Virginia] and the D.C. market,” he said. “There are a lot more consulting firms and it’s hard to be a differentiating provider when you get into a market like that… in Raleigh there’s more opportunity for us to bring our niche services to town.”

Samuels said B2B could soon have up to a half dozen employees working out of the new office. B2B recently hired three new workers, bringing its total headcount to 18.

B2B has existing clients in the Raleigh market including a multi-state real estate development firm.
