A group of Southside restaurant owners are picking up in the Fan where many have failed.
The pair of husband-and-wife teams behind Belle Vie European Bistro in Midlothian plan to open Brux’l Café at 1731 W. Main St.
Owners Yves and Karine Danis and Stephanie and Xavier Meers signed a lease in March for the 1,500-square-foot space that was previously home to Peacock’s Pantry before it closed in 2013. At least four other restaurants operated out of the space in recent years including Cirrus, Dogwood Grille & Spirits, Plaza Mexico and Mainstream.
With a planned May opening, the new tenants hope Belgian food is the concept that finally sticks.
“When this opportunity came on the market, it was too good to pass up,” Karine Danis said.
They wouldn’t say how much they’re spending on the venture to open Brux’l, which is an abbreviated version of the French word for “Brussels.” They plan to serve Belgian fare and will have a board for customers to make menu recommendations.
The chef, Xavier Meers, has worked in restaurants in France and Belgium, and his grandfather once owned a restaurant in Brussels.
Yves Danis and Stephanie Meers are brother and sister.
The foursome opened Belle Vie in 2009 at 1244 Alverser Plaza.

So cool, congrats!! I was stationed in Belgium (’88-’90) when I was in the Army. I used to get pain brochettes served with frites on top at this frite stand in Mons. I would get either andalouse (have yet to find it here) or mayonnaise on top. That would be a good menu item.
Now if we only had a really good German restaurant that was on par with The Bavarian Chef in Fredericksburg.
After three wonderful years in Belgium, we welcome this new addition to Richmond. Moules and Frittes were a favorite, but so was everything else.
