A high-end women’s retailer has outgrown its longtime Midlothian storefront but is staying in the Southside area that fueled its growth.
Penelope at Midlothian is moving later this month to 14223 Midlothian Turnpike in the Ivymont Square Shopping Center. Owner Penelope Searcy signed a five-year lease for the 3,200 square-foot space last month.
The new store is double the size of Penelope’s current location just a mile away at 1229 Sycamore Square in the Sycamore Square Shopping Center, where it has been for nearly 20 years.
“We’re like the Midlothian neighborhood boutique,” Searcy said. “We didn’t want to desert our customers after 18 years.”
Searcy opened the first Penelope in Lynchburg in 1988. It sells women’s clothing, accessories, shoes and jewelry.
Since then, she’s opened seven other stores in Virginia, including spots in Short Pump, Glen Allen and Charlottesville.
Searcy said her business overall did $300,000 in sales in the first quarter this year. Small charms at Penelope’s sell for about $30, and bracelets can cost up to $1,000.
The Sycamore Square location will remain open until the end of May, Searcy said. The new location will open June 3.
Penelope joins a slew of other retailers and restaurants inside the Kroger-anchored Ivymont Square strip. Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer manages the Southside property.
