A long-time local doctor and small franchise owner has steered his newest venture into business.
Thunderbolt Indoor Karting opened last week inside 40,000 square feet at 1365 Carmia Way. It took over the former a Rooms To Go furniture store space earlier this year.
Driven by neonatologist Sandy Tarant, Thunderbolt has a quarter-mile long indoor track with 27 electric go-karts. The space also includes arcade games, a 300-square-foot party room and a 1,000-square-foot conference room that Tarant plans to rent out for corporate clients. A single go-round the track will cost an adult about $20.
In addition to working as a physician at Southside Regional Hospital, Tarant owns seven Richmond area Great Clips hair salon franchises and has an eighth in the works for Charlottesville.
He said getting a new brand up-and-running proved to be challenging at times.
“I felt on certain days my head was going to explode,” Tarant said of getting Thunderbolt open. “Even having owned and operated franchises, one doesn’t really know how formidable it is to set up entirely on one’s own.”

Good story except the comment about “a single go-round the track with cost an adult about $20” is a little misleading. I was just there over the weekend and I believe the pricing is $20 for one “race” which consists of 14 laps around the track not just one lap.
