Students may be out for the summer, but there’s still a lot of work going on at one local private school.
St. Edward-Epiphany Catholic School is in the middle of a $2.3 million transformation.
The 60-year-old building, located at 10701 W. Huguenot Road, is getting a new roof, new windows and doors, fresh paint, better lighting, acoustic ceiling tiles, and new electrical, HVAC, data, fire alarm and security systems.
The school is also renovating and expanding its library and computer lab into a modern media center.
Tracy Hamner, the school’s assistant principal, said the work is long overdue.
“We had window (air conditioning) units in the windows, and the windows were 60 years old. They’ve never been replaced,” Hamner said. “The roof was leaking.”
Hamner said work started as soon as school let out June 6. General contractor eTec is expected to wrap up by Aug. 25 so teachers can get into their classrooms to prepare for the school year. The school got special permission to start classes Sept. 2 to accommodate the project.
“It’s going to look like a whole new building,” Hamner said.
The school has raised about half of the money to pay for the renovations, with some help from St. Edward Catholic Church. The Catholic Diocese of Richmond loaned it the rest of the money in the interim.
The St. Edwards Catholic Church and the school used to share the building until they outgrew the space and the church moved next door.
St. Edward-Epiphany Catholic School has 470 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. It is a regional school that serves five local churches. Tuition is about $5,000 a year for Catholic students and $8,780 for non-Catholic students. Discounts are given to families with more than one child attending.

The work looks great! Thank you eTEC for all your hard work and congratulations to the school, church and diocese for continuing to invest in Catholic education. Signed, a proud alum (’76) and mom of two more (’09 and ’11)!
I, too am an alum – from the first graduating class that completed 1st – 8th grades. Air conditioning? Back when I was in school it was called opening the windows and drawing the shades! And possibly making fans with loose leaf paper. Glad to see they are getting some upgrades! (Btw, the building is not 60 years old – I attended the groundbreaking with my mother when I was 4, and I’m 59.)
