A new Henrico eatery puts the urban in suburban, and in Oregon Hill a dormant restaurant property has come back to life.
Garland Taylor, owner of Home Team Grill, opened his new concept Urban Tavern at 10496 Ridgefield Parkway in Henrico in the Gleneagles Shopping Center on Aug. 4. The space was formerly home to Shackelford’s Restaurant, which had been in business for 19 years.
Taylor hired Ashland-based Kor Food Innovation, a consulting firm that focuses on the food and beverage industry, to help make the menu and design the layout of Urban Tavern’s 4,200 square feet.
“This is my 10th restaurant and the first time I ever used a consulting group,” Taylor said. “It’s an insurance policy. It’s a way to help ensure a desired outcome.”
Food at Urban Tavern comes in small, medium and large plates, from a $4 appetizer of walnuts to an entire rotisserie chicken. Prices run up to about $30.
Urban Tavern’s interior and patio can seat 180. The bar and the dining area are divided by two large communal tables.
The garage-style doors that open to Urban Tavern’s patio are an architectural nod to the Home Team Grill in the Fan. Taylor also owns Home Team Grill locations in the West End and Fredericksburg.
Back east in Oregon Hill, David Shannon opened his new restaurant, L’Opossum at 626 China St. on Aug. 5.
Shannon bought the property in March after it had been left vacant when EAT by Pescados closed down.
“It’s a great time to open,” Shannon said. “It’s a quiet time in the Richmond dining scene.”
Shannon had previously hoped to open in May, but it took some time to get the interior how he wanted. The walls are lined with gold-framed mirrors and paintings from an art collection Shannon has been working on for about 30 years.
The space seats 50 comfortably, Shannon said. The menu is loosely French and includes escargots, lamb and soft shell crabs. Entrees cost between $18 and $29.
Shannon ran Dogwood Grille at 1731 W. Main St. between 2003 and 2007. He said he’s seen regulars from the Dogwood visit L’Opossum, along with a mix of other restaurant owners and Oregon Hill residents.
