A Fan nightclub space is up for grabs due to tax troubles, and a Short Pump restaurant has gone dark.

The Martini Kitchen and Bubble Bar at 1911 W. Main St. in the Fan closed over the weekend. Then on Monday, Mimi’s Cafe at 11275 W. Broad St. in West Broad Village shut its doors.

The Martini Kitchen was shut down for unpaid taxes, according to a note posted on the door by the Virginia Department of Taxation. The business, which was opened by Edgar Rosales in 2005, owes $191,162, the Oct. 21 note states.

“This business has been closed and its property has been distrained for nonpayment of Virginia taxes,” the note read.

The bar’s closing was first reported by Richmond.com. Rosales could not be reached for comment.

It isn’t the first time The Martini Kitchen has been shaken up. The business filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in early 2013. Most of its largest debts at the time were related to taxes, bankruptcy records showed.

Martini Kitchen’s 6,000 square feet is now on the market, along with an adjoining 7,600-square-foot space.

Local real estate firm Thalhimer Realty Partners owns the property, which formerly housed the now defunct Main Street Beer Co.

Brokers James Ashby and Reilly Marchant of Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer are handling the leasing. Ashby said he’d like to see another restaurant move into the Fan property.

“It has 96 parking spaces, which is extremely rare,” Ashby said. “Our hope is to get it leased by the end of the year, which would let a new tenant get it open in second quarter of next year.”

The plumbing and floor drains needed for a brewery remain intact, Marchant said.

Out at West Broad Village, Mimi’s Cafe’s closing is part of wider move by the chain to shut down locations around Virginia.

Its Fredericksburg and Gainesville restaurants have also closed, according to a Fredericksburg.com story.

Mimi’s opened in its 6,700-square-foot West Broad Village space in 2009 as the massive mixed-use project was still in its early stages. Frank Gallaher of CBRE, the firm that handles leasing for West Broad Village, said Mimi’s Kitchen still has a lease for the property.

No one from Mimi’s Kitchen could be reached for comment.

The French and American casual restaurant is based in California and has dozens of locations across the country. Its lone remaining Virginia location is in Sterling, according to its website.

Mimi’s Broad Street neighbors at West Broad Village include Kona Grill, Chuy’s and Bonefish Grill.

Had meals there twice. Both times, the service was poor and the food was pedestrian and not much to brag about. This is not surprising…
