When considering his first stationary retail spot, a local peddler of frozen treats decided to stick with Scott’s Addition.
King of Pops will open a walk-up retail window on May 22 at 3001 W. Clay St. The ice pop maker has used the 900-square-foot space since 2013 as a base for its mobile operations but will now open that location up for sales seven days a week.
Owner Paul Cassimus said the decision for more permanent retail was prompted in part by Scott’s Addition’s growing number of apartments and local businesses. He’s also worked with his landlord to build a patio on-site, and a mural is in the works.
“I’ve seen the neighborhood grow up around me,” Cassimus said. “I just saw it as a great opportunity.”
Since its launch in 2012, King of Pops has sold its desserts from carts in Carytown and Short Pump, as well as at local farmers markets and festivals. Its flavors include Banana Puddin’, Chocolate Sea Salt, Fresh Peach and Lemon Basil.
Cassimus said people often call him in search of a King of Pops location – a cumbersome thing to explain for a mobile business. He said now, he’ll always have a definitive answer.
“Seeing the way Scott’s Addition was going and getting feedback from people calling my phone trying to find us, it made the most sense,” he said.
