The first tenant of an ongoing downtown hotel project has checked in.

Belle and James, a new restaurant on the ground floor of 700 E. Main St., an 18-story former office tower that is being converted into two Hilton-branded hotels, opened for business this week.

The 2,600-square-foot restaurant sells French and American food and is owned by Kunal Shah. Shah also owns ventures in Washington, D.C., and has plans to open two more in Richmond in the same building as Belle and James. In about two months, he plans to open a juice bar called Sip in a 1,000-square-foot space on the ground floor of the hotel. And Shah plans to follow up with a rooftop bar called Kabana in three or four months.

The building is owned by locally based Shamin Hotels, which purchased the 182,000-square-foot property for $7 million in 2013. Shamin CEO Neil Amin said the finishing touches are being put on the hotel but could not say when it might open.
