Richmond’s biggest law firm is getting bigger in other markets.
McGuireWoods last week announced expansions in San Francisco and Pittsburgh, where it lured a pair of experienced attorneys over from rival Reed Smith.
Mary Hackett joins McGuireWoods’ Pittsburgh office, while David Powell is on board to man the firm’s first office in San Francisco.
Richard Cullen, chairman of McGuireWoods, said the additions will deepen the firm’s bench for financial litigation work, through which it represents the likes of Wells Fargo, Bank of America and others.
The San Francisco office is the firm’s 22nd and joins two other outposts in California, in Los Angeles and Century City.
“San Francisco is a city where we have wanted to be for years and didn’t want to go and just hang up our shingle,” Cullen said. “With David (Powell), it’s just a great opportunity because he’s there, he’s established and he will fit in nicely with what we’re doing around the country.”
Powell graduated from University of California, Davis received his law degree from UC’s Hastings College of the Law.
Hackett joins a McGuireWoods office of about three dozen in Pittsburgh, where Reed Smith was founded. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College and received a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh and is a former chief litigation officer from banking giant PNC Financial.
Cullen wouldn’t comment on the potential revenue impact the two new additions might have, but a report from trade publication American Lawyer said the pair brings over a $60 million to $70 million book of business.
For now, Powell is the firm’s lone attorney on the ground in San Francisco, one of the healthier metro areas on the country. Cullen said that could change over time.
“Long term we hope to have a nice size office there,” he said. “We’ll start with financial litigation, but hope to have many other areas where we can service new clients and current clients.”
Cullen said the firm will continue to keep its eye on talent in certain practices around the country and will consider expansion when the opportunity arises.
McGuireWoods now has 22 offices worldwide and more than 1,000 attorneys.
In Richmond it has nearly 250 attorneys and is the largest law firm in Richmond, according to a 2015 BizSense tally. Reed Smith has 19 attorneys in its Richmond office.
