Hoping to capitalize on a spurt of redevelopment in his family’s old neighborhood, a local restaurant owner has set up shop in Manchester.

Ironclad Pizza Grill opened April 8 at 924 McDonough St. The restaurant’s 0.21-acre parcel and its constructed 1,500-square-foot building are familiar territory for Martin.

“It’s literally right next to my grandparents old home,” he said. “My family has been in the neighborhood since the 40s. It’s kind of cool to make a full circle.”

Martin is also familiar with running a pizza shop. He opened Rascals Pizza in 1997 in Chesterfield and sold it in 2013 to open Ironclad.

Ironclad and the second story apartment above it sit on land previously occupied by a row house. It joins other development going on in Manchester that includes Spy Rock Real Estate’s Old Store Lofts and Thalhimer Realty Partners’ work on City View Landing.

Ironclad sells pies, salads, burgers and subs for sit-down and carry-out lunch and dinner.

In addition to an influx of apartment dwellers, Martin hopes Ironclad will draw business from hungry workers at the nearby offices of UPS and SunTrust. All the redevelopment convinced Martin a restaurant would do well in the area.

“It’s just kind of cool to the see the old neighborhood revitalized,” he said.

I bet the good folks at SunTrust and UPS are very happy to see this opening up! The Southside has needed more lunch options for a while now. Best of luck to Ironclad!
