The king of online retail is making another big move into the Richmond region.

Amazon, which already operates two massive fulfillment centers in Chesterfield and Dinwiddie, is preparing to open a new facility in Hanover County.

The Seattle-based company has leased roughly 320,000 square feet at 11600 N. Lakeridge Parkway in the Exchange at Northlake Industrial Park, in a building developed on spec by local firm Devon USA.

E. Linwood Thomas IV, head of the county’s economic development office, confirmed the deal and said the center will employ up to 300 people and open by Sept. 1.

“We are grateful to local developer Devon USA for having the vision and foresight to build a facility of this magnitude in Hanover County,” Thomas said. “The end result is a tenant in Amazon we can all be proud of.”

The building was completed earlier this summer after crews launched construction of the site in March, Thomas said. Ashland-based McKinney and Co. did the architectural and engineering designs for the building. It’s part of the 400-acre industrial park just off Interstate 95.

Amazon did not request county or state incentives to establish the new facility, Thomas said, adding that the online retailer noticed the spec building was available for lease.

“They realized it was available and decided to take the entire building before it was even constructed,” Thomas said.

Amazon already has online postings up for jobs at the new facility, which it calls the Ashland Sortation Center. Hourly wages as a part-time sorter are $12.75 an hour, according to one posting.

Edward Mitchell, Devon USA managing director, could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon.

Amazon’s two local fulfillment centers are at 1901 Meadowville Technology Parkway in Chesterfield County and at 5000 Commerce Way in Dinwiddie County.

They employ more than 1,100 people combined and each stand at around 1 million square feet.

This is an exceptional opportunity for those to earn a very nice entry level salary. No one gets rich but Bezos but $25K with benefits is a decent wage for a beginner without a tech education.
