With one for-profit college taking over where another left off, classes will soon be back in session at a sizable Short Pump building.
ECPI University is slated to open for classes on Jan. 24 at 11104 W. Broad St., which for nearly a decade was an outpost of Stratford University. ECPI has relocated its operations from 4305 Cox Road to the new Short Pump location.
The new building will be the first Richmond-area outpost to offer ECPI’s culinary arts program. The program begins locally in the spring, ECPI spokeswoman Jessica Davenport said in an email Friday.
The Short Pump spot also offers a bachelor of science in nursing degree, which wasn’t offered at the Cox Road site. Other programs offered at the Short Pump location are cyber and information security, business management and engineering technology.
“The new Short Pump campus will expand our lab space and allow us to add course offerings,” ECPI University President Mark Dreyfus said in a prepared statement.
The Short Pump location is in a one-story office building that was built in 1984 and renovated in 2010. Stratford opened there in 2010 and pulled the plug on the location in 2019.
At about 50,000 square feet, the space is twice the size of the Cox Road location where ECPI opened in 2003, Davenport said.
ECPI’s landlord in Short Pump is Thalhimer, which keeps its headquarters next door at 11100 W. Broad St. Amy Broderick and Rett Turner handled the leasing for Thalhimer in the ECPI deal.
ECPI has 16 locations in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Florida, according to its website. It operates local outposts at 2809 Emerywood Parkway in Henrico County and 800 Moorefield Park Drive in Chesterfield County.

I’m surprised the Short Pump building is that old. I wasn’t around during the westward expansion down Broad Street. I suppose that was one of the earlier buildings to be constructed west of 64. Across the street was cow pasture.
