Goochland-based Performance Food Group kept its crown, while a newcomer was added to the Richmond-area contingent on the Fortune 500.
Eight locally based companies made Fortune Magazine’s annual list of the largest American companies based on annual revenue. The latest rankings were announced Monday.
For the second year in a row, Performance Food Group remained the highest-ranked local firm on the list at No. 112. Its $30.4 billion in annual revenue from 2021 was up 21 percent from the previous year, when it ranked No. 114.
PFG pulled ahead of Henrico-based Altria Group for the top spot among local companies in last year’s ranking, breaking the tobacco giant’s streak as the top money-making local company on the list.
New among the local cohort of Fortune 500 companies was Henrico-based convenience store owner Arko Corp., which generated $6.4 billion in revenue and snagged the 498th spot in the rankings.
Altria remained the second highest local company on the list but fell 27 positions to No. 165, despite growing its revenue by 1.3 percent to $21.1 billion.
Next on the list locally was used vehicle retailer CarMax, which fell 38 spots to No. 174 after a 6.2 percent revenue drop to $20.1 billion.
The region’s other usuals on the list made the cut again this year, with Dominion Energy, Markel, Owens & Minor and Genworth ranking 257, 289, 361 and 434, respectively.
While not reaching the top 500, three local companies — Brink’s, NewMarket and ASGN — were in the Fortune 1000.
Statewide, Virginia had 34 companies in the top 1,000, of which 21 companies were included in the top 500. Last year, the state counted 39 companies in the top 1,000, and 22 firms in the top 500.
The top Virginia company was government-backed mortgage provider Freddie Mac. The McLean-based company took spot 56 with $65.9 billion in revenue.
The top five companies in the Fortune 500 nationally were Walmart, Amazon, Apple, CVS Health and UnitedHealth Group.
Companies ranked on the Fortune 500 generated $16.1 trillion in revenue and $1.8 trillion in profits.
