A Henrico County private school has sold its main campus as it plans to relocate and consolidate its operations in a new location.
Northstar Academy, which provides K-12 and vocational education to students with disabilities, sold its campus at 8055 Shrader Road for $1.4 million in mid-May, according to spokeswoman Chelsea Vrabel.
The buyer was Mirako LLC, which received a rezoning approval for the property from the Henrico Board of Supervisors at a May meeting for “wholesale sales of coffee and related equipment,” according to that meeting’s agenda materials. The company would not comment for this article.
The Shrader Road campus consists of two buildings with a combined 13,000 square feet. The property was most recently valued at $1.8 million. The deal wasn’t yet reflected in Henrico’s online property records Thursday.
Northstar will be relocating to the former Strayer University facility at 11501 Nuckols Road, a property it purchased last year. It plans to begin to move into the new location in late June and expects to spend about $500,000 on renovations to the 21,000-square-foot building.
The school will begin to hold classes in its new location starting with the 2022-2023 school year. Its summer school program this summer will be held at the Shrader Road campus.
Northstar is in the midst of an $8 million capital campaign, which funded the $4.5 million acquisition of the Nuckols Road property and will eventually fund construction of athletic fields and a gym at its new 10-acre property.
Though Northstar has said the new location provides space to grow its student body, Vrabel said there currently aren’t immediate plans to do so. Northstar has about 125 students across its facilities.
UrbanCore is the general contractor for the renovations of the Nuckols property. Baskervill is the project architect and Raymond Hunt and Romey Poore of EDC are project managers. Northstar held a ground-breaking ceremony for the renovations at its new location earlier this year.
Northstar also operates a satellite career academy at 8155-A Staples Mill Road but will end that lease in July and shift those operations to the Nuckols Road property.
