The parent company of TJ Maxx is bringing two new-to-market concepts to an empty big box store in Short Pump.

Outdoors clothing and gear retailer Sierra, formerly known as Sierra Trading Post, plans to open a store in a portion of the former Stein Mart in Short Pump Crossing Shopping Center.

The rest of the former Stein Mart at 3544 Pump Road will be occupied by Homesense, a home furniture and furnishings brand that also falls under the umbrella of parent company TJX Cos.

The stores would appear to be the first in the Richmond area, as neither brand currently has a presence in the area, according to their websites.

It’s unclear when the stores will open. Neither company responded to requests for comment. Signs that promoted the upcoming stores were set up outside the space.

The stores will split the 40,000-square-foot space left empty by Stein Mart when it shuttered Richmond-area stores in 2020 during its bankruptcy.

The building is undergoing renovations that will add about 3,200 more square feet due to new mezzanines, according to information provided by Henrico’s building construction and inspections department. The Sierra will be about 18,500 square feet and the Homesense will be about 24,700 square feet. L. F. Jennings is the general contractor.

Short Pump Crossing is anchored by Publix.

Sierra sells off-price gear for sports and outdoors activities like camping as well as clothing, shoes and accessories. It offers brands like Carhartt, Filson, Crocs and others.

Per Sierra’s website, the chain has about 30 stores in 23 states, including a location in Charlottesville.

Homesense is also a discount retailer, which sells furniture, rugs, lighting and decor. The chain has 40 locations in 10 states, including three in Northern Virginia, according to its website.

Thalhimer’s Connie Jordan Nielsen and David Crawford handled the lease negotiations on behalf of the landlord at Short Pump Crossing. Nielsen also represented the tenants, along with Thalhimer’s Nicki Jassy.

The two TJX-owned brands will be the latest new big box arrivals to the Short Pump retail scene. In the nearby The Corner at Short Pump shopping center, Academy Sports + Outdoors plans to open its first Richmond-area store in the center’s former Toys ‘R’ Us.
