Two fast-casual restaurant chains, one a newcomer to the area and the other well established here, closed out 2022 with new locations South of the James.

Teriyaki Madness opened its first Richmond-area outpost in December at 14273 Winterview Parkway in Winterfield Crossing, while Chipotle Mexican Grill opened at 505 Hull St. in the City View Marketplace development.

At the helm of the local Teriyaki Madness franchise is Mike Fleck, owner of River City Diner, and his son-in-law Jared Shanks, who is the franchise’s managing partner.

They opened the restaurant in a 1,600-square-foot space between Qdoba Mexican Eats and Carytown Bicycle Co. in the mixed-use Winterfield Crossing development.

The Teriyaki Madness menu consists of bowls like steak teriyaki and orange chicken served with rice or noodles, as well as appetizers like chicken egg rolls and crab rangoon.

The Chesterfield restaurant has seating for 20 people. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Shanks said about $650,000 was invested in the buildout, equipment and food inventory to be prepared to open.

Shanks said he’s interested in further growing the chain locally, and may look to bring it to Short Pump and then later to Richmond.

“We’re really excited about both Richmond and Short Pump. Probably Short Pump first and Richmond second, somewhere near VCU’s campus,” Shanks said.

The burrito chain opened on Hull Street on Dec. 23, according to company spokeswoman Kayla Prag. (Google Maps)

The restaurant occupies a 3,000-square-foot space at the City View Marketplace development, which also houses The Continental and an ABC store, among other commercial tenants and residences.

The outpost, which is Chipotle’s first in South Richmond, is also the first in the city to offer a walk-up window, Prag said.

Chipotle has about 20 locations in the Richmond region, according to its website. Another of its newer locations opened in September at 14171 Midlothian Turnpike in a new outparcel at Ivymont Square shopping center across from Winterfield Crossing.
