Buc-ee’s has officially taken a bite out of Virginia.
The Texas-based chain known for its massive, beaver-logoed convenience stores and gas stations has purchased nearly 28 acres in New Kent County, where it’s planning its first store in state.
Buc-ee’s bought an unaddressed parcel near Interstate 64’s Talleysville exit off State Route 609 for $6.5 million, according to company general counsel Jeff Nadalo.
The transaction, which closed June 14, was not yet reflected on New Kent County property records.
The deal comes a few months after Buc-ee’s filed plans with New Kent for a 75,000-square-foot store and fuel center on the site. The New Kent Board of Supervisors approved the company’s conditional-use permit application at its April 10 meeting, county records show.
Buc-ee’s has developed a cult following in recent years as the company has expanded beyond its home state of Texas with 48 locations nationally. In addition to gasoline and electric vehicle charging stations, Buc-ee’s also offers barbecue brisket, its own brand of packaged candy, myriad beaver-logo merchandise and other Tex-Mex food like tacos and burritos.
S.L. Nusbaum’s Nathan Shor, who represented Buc-ee’s in the New Kent deal, said the chain is looking into other locations in the commonwealth.
Nadalo said Buc-ee’s doesn’t have a definitive timeline yet for starting construction on the New Kent store.

It’s an amazing store. I’m not a jerky eater but if you are, you’ll be in heaven. The jerky counter alone is nearly 25’ long featuring about 50 styles of it. The smell of brisket permeates the place as well. It takes a lot of cows to fulfill this stores brisket production. 120 gas pumps and the longest car wash tunnel in the world. They don’t allow semis in case you think it’s a truck stop, but buses full of tourists, no problem. My wife didn’t want to see it but I almost never got her to leave. If you… Read more »
Now we need one right near Colonial Heights please. I’d say the Waltfall interchange at Exit 58 on I95 in South Chesterfield would be perfect for it.
I love Buc-ees but here’s a word of caution regarding ingress and egress. The county, VDOT and Buc-ees need to make sure that there are adequate lanes so they can avoid the problem that exists in Florence S.C.where traffic exiting from Buc-ees to I-95 North is seriously impacted. I actually went 1 exit South ( only a mile) to avoid a possible 15–20-minute back-up.
Brian hit it on the head; I hope they consider road enhancements and VDOT puts a wider or 2nd bridge over I64. That westbound off ramp will easily back up on the Interstate if they do not make improvements especially give all the new homes going in behind the area too. If you get off to go the Arby now it can be 5-6 vehicles (and usually one is a large truck) waiting.
Changing that interchange to a double teardrop roundabout would work wonders. Maybe even add a special turning lane directly into Bucees off the ramp. That would take a little stress off the main road into the place.
