Chesterfield nearing completion of $65 million Route 10 widening project

A major road widening project outside Meadowville Technology Park in Chesterfield County is entering the home stretch.

The $65 million expansion of Route 10 between Bermuda Triangle Road and Rivers Bend Boulevard is expected to be largely completed soon, with all eight travel lanes of the expanded roadway anticipated to be open to traffic before the end of 2023 after years of construction.

The project also involves a six-lane expansion of Meadowville Road between Route 10 and where it intersects with Rivers Bend Boulevard near Hogans Drive. The county announced that the new traffic signal for the revamped intersection that connects those two pieces of the project became operational in late October.

The two-mile Route 10 section was previously four lanes, while the Meadowville section was formerly two lanes.

Chessa Walker, who recently became Chesterfield’s transportation director after nearly a decade of working for the county, said the project is the biggest during her eight-year tenure.

Walker said the project was deemed necessary by county leaders to accommodate future traffic coming with growth in the area. She noted the project area is between I-95 and I-295, and that the area has substantial industrial and residential development. The project area is close to Meadowville Technology Park, where companies like toymaker Lego and indoor farming company Plenty are working on new facilities.

“With the uses and two interstates and proposed volume, we determined we needed the eight lanes of through capacity,” she said.

The project features a Superstreet intersection, also known as a Restricted Crossing U-turn (RCUT). The intersection is the first of its kind in Chesterfield and is intended to provide faster and safer travel through a system of U-turns, and that limits left turns compared to the traditional intersection that once stood there.

Drivers on minor cross streets of the intersection aren’t able to make left turns or drive through the intersection directly. Instead, the traffic on cross streets makes a right turn and then U-turn to get where they want to go.

The widening project is largely completed, save for some paving still to come on the western side of the project area, Walker said. The new intersection is currently operational.

The project’s general contractor is Branscome. McCormick Taylor and Kimley-Horn have provided engineering services.

The project has been covered by a combination of local, state and federal funding.

Construction started in October 2019 and was originally planned to wrap up in about two-and-a-half years. That timeline got extended largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the supply chain and operational headaches that came along with it, Walker said.

“COVID was a huge reason we got so far off schedule,” she said. “The community has been more than patient with us.”

The Route 10 widening project enters its final phases just as another large county transportation project is kicking off. Chesterfield held a ground-breaking ceremony in October for the $35 million project to extend Nash Road to connect with another section of Route 10 near the county government complex.

Big things are happening everywhere on Route 10 as it winds its way across Chesterfield. Be on the lookout for more new announcements.

Wow, widening this road cost $5 million more than constructing the entire Broad Street Pulse line…

Yeah. But which will be money better spent? My guess is Chesterfield will be the winner. The pulse bus is losing the peoples’ money faster than it can give it away.

The article says Route 10 and Bermuda Triangle Road. It’s Bermuda Hundred Road but calling it Bermuda Triangle Road may be more appropriate! 😂

The article says “expansion of Route 10 between Bermuda Triangle Road and Rivers Bend Boulevard.” Bermuda Triangle Road is located near I-95 and Route 10. The road names are correctly listed in the article.
