After closing its brick-and-mortar store in Henrico several years ago, a high-end clothing consignment business is back in a storefront of its own in South Richmond.
Baggio recently opened at 3016 Stony Point Road in the Stony Point Village Shopping Center.
For owner Norma Santamaria, the new shop replaces her original location at Gayton Crossing, which she shuttered in 2020 after nearly two decades of operation there. The closure at the time was for personal health concerns early in the COVID-19 pandemic, and Baggio transitioned to focus on online sales and made use of a showroom in her home.
“I have a compromised immune system so I was petrified by what was going on,” Santamaria said.
When the original store closed, Santamaria wasn’t totally sure whether she would reopen. She came around to the idea more recently to regain the brick-and-mortar advantages of tapping into walk-in foot traffic and giving customers a chance to check out garments in person.
“I decided it was time. The merchandise I carry is wonderful and most of the merchandise I carry is new with tags,” she said. “People are able to try and see and touch.”
Baggio carries clothing, shoes and accessories from brands like Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton.
“I look for only the high-end labels. There’s so much out there but I want to focus on luxury items,” she said.
One holdover from Baggio’s stint between storefronts is private shopping appointments. Santamaria said that offering proved popular while the business was situated at home, so the new store has a few days of the week dedicated to appointments.
“That way I can do everything for everybody the way they want,” she said. “At home was great for people who wanted it catered to themselves. It was a very intimate setup.”
Baggio opened in December at an 800-square-foot space formerly used as a property management office for the shopping center. The store’s spot is near indoor marketplace 5807 South, a second location of The Shops at 5807 that opened last year. Baggio occupied a vendor stall at 5807 South for several months before moving into its own storefront in the same center.
Santamaria founded Baggio in the late 1990s as a home-based business. She opened the Gayton Crossing store in 2002.
Stony Point Village is anchored by Trader Joe’s and Planet Fitness. Other tenants include Good Foods Grocery, which recently changed hands, as well as Gelati Celesti among others.
