C&F Bank swapping branches in Brandermill area

C&F Bank is taking over a branch building at 13200 Hull Street Road, which was recently vacated by Wells Fargo.

A local bank has swooped in on a spot in Midlothian left vacant by a national competitor.

C&F Bank is relocating its longtime Brandermill-area branch at 4901 Millridge Parkway to a former Wells Fargo location around the corner, at 13200 Hull Street Road.

The move gives C&F a larger, more visible site along a busy stretch of the county. Its Millridge location is tucked away off the main thoroughfare, while the new location will give it a prime placement on Hull Street Road.

Matthew Steilberg, C&F’s head of retail operations, said the bank jumped at the chance to lease the building when Wells Fargo vacated earlier this month.

“We love the neighborhood, we love the market,” Steilberg said. “This is going to be a much better facility for our customers and a lot better visibility.”

The 3,400-square-foot space on Hull is nearly twice the size of C&F’s Millridge building and has more space for private offices. Steilberg said that will give the bank room to add on-site services it can’t offer at its current location.

“We can have some of our mortgage team, wealth management team and business banking team in this location. I don’t have the room for it where we are now,” he said, adding that the drive-thru setup at the new branch is also better.

C&F has four locations across Chesterfield County and Steilberg said it’s an attractive market for banks’ retail branching strategies.

“You’ve got to play offense in Chesterfield. Everyone wants to be in that market,” he said, referring to competitors such as Chase Bank, which has been opening branches rapidly throughout the county.

C&F is leasing the former Wells building from owner Porter Realty.

Steilberg said the bank will do some renovations to the interior and is aiming to open in June or July. Its Millridge location will remain open as usual in the meantime.

“We’ll be changing the color scheme, opening it up and offering the modern financial center we’re known for,” he said. PWCampbell is C&F’s architect for the new branch.

C&F owns the Millridge building, having inherited it a decade ago through its acquisition of Central Virginia Bank.

C&F already has a “coming soon” sign up on the door at the building on Hull and Steilberg said the bank has sent letters to surrounding homes and businesses to announce its arrival.

He said the bank is hoping to win the business of customers who may have banked with the building’s previous tenant and may not be aware of the changeover.

“For the next year I guarantee we’ll have Wells customers who come up and say, ‘Where do I make my deposit?’” Steilberg said. “We’re pretty confident that people will be interested in our bank.”

And if you’re old enough to remember the Millridge location started as an Investor’s Savings Bank.

Yes, and I was one of the architects for the building they are moving into.
