One of the longest-running restaurants in Carytown has closed.
Baker’s Crust Artisan Kitchen ceased operations at 3553 W. Cary St. on March 3, marking the end of a 26-year-run in that location for the Virginia Beach-based chain.
The company was founded in 1993 with a menu centered on salads, sandwiches and soups, as well as Neapolitan pizzas. Baker’s Crust added to its Richmond footprint in 2003 when it opened as one of the original tenants at Short Pump Town Center, a location that remains open.
Multiple attempts to reach Baker’s Crust leadership for comment went unreturned this week.
Including the Short Pump spot, Baker’s Crust now has seven locations throughout the state, the majority of which are in Hampton Roads.
Baker’s Crust shared the 5,900-square-foot building on the western end of Carytown with Starbucks. The coffee giant recently signed a lease for a new shop directly across the street at the Publix-anchored Carytown Exchange development, where it’ll take around 2,400 square feet. It’s unclear what will become of the existing Carytown location. Starbucks spokespeople weren’t available for comment by press time.
Also heading to Carytown Exchange is breakfast chain Rise Southern Biscuits and Righteous Chicken.
Other new eateries en route to Carytown include Young Mother, a Korean and Japanese spot from Daniel Harthausen, and Ripple Ray’s, a restaurant, bar and music venue that’s taking over the former Town Hall and Weezie’s Kitchen space. Important Bodega Bar, a Spanish restaurant from Emilio Peiro, recently opened at 3031 W. Cary St.

This has always been one of my favorite restaurants, for the last fifteen years 🙁 It always used to be really full, but the last few times I’ve been, much smaller crowds, and the service wasn’t great. Wonder if they were having issues finding staff, they closed their dinner service recently.
Damn, that is unfortunate.
I cannot confirm the accuracy of this, but I heard that the building will be razed so a Kroger fuel center can be added to this location.
Darn I was hoping Starbucks was moving across the street so this site could be demolished and turned into a new drive through location.
The Short Pump Town Center location is very good.
Where else can I get soup in a bowl without flying to short dump?
