Several years after opening an emergency department in Short Pump, Bon Secours is working on plans to further expand its presence in western Henrico.

The health system recently filed a plan of development with Henrico County for a new ambulatory surgery center at its Short Pump Medical Plaza.

Plans call for a one-story medical facility of more than 14,000 square feet, of which 8,000 square feet would be occupied by the surgical center and the remainder shell space, per online county records.

The facility would be built on what’s now a 2-acre grassy pad north of the Aldi grocery store at the Broad Hill Centre development and west of an existing parking lot outside the Bon Secours Short Pump Emergency Center at 12320 W. Broad St. The land is already zoned appropriately for the project.

The outpatient center would handle cardiac catheterization and related services. Bon Secours stated in its certificate of public need (COPN) application filed for the project that the center would be dedicated to diagnostic and elective interventional procedures.

Certain medical and healthcare facilities and equipment require COPN approval from the state’s health commissioner before they can be established in Virginia.

The project’s associated COPN application, which was approved in December, states the facility would be outfitted with one cardiac catheterization unit. That’s a reduction from the two such units that Bon Secours originally proposed in a letter of intent that preceded the submission of the application in August 2023.

The facility’s unit would be sourced from St. Mary’s Hospital in Henrico, which would relocate one of its four units to equip the Short Pump center.

The center is a joint venture between Bon Secours Mercy Health and Compass Surgical Partners, an ambulatory surgery center developer and management firm out of Raleigh, North Carolina. Bon Secours owns 51% of the Short Pump CV Ambulatory Surgery Center LLC that will own and operate the facility, while Compass owns 49%. The LLC would lease the center’s space from the Bon Secours Richmond Health System, the local arm of the health system and owner of the 21-acre Short Pump property where the center would be located.

As of late last year, the center was anticipated to cost $13.8 million and be completed by July 2025. Whether those projections still hold true was unclear. A Bon Secours spokeswoman declined to comment on the project last week.

The planned surgical center follows the creation of a neighboring two-story medical building that is home to a Bon Secours emergency department and primary care practice. That building opened in 2018 and so far is the only facility on the health system’s Short Pump property, which it acquired in 2014.

The expansion in Short Pump comes as Bon Secours continues to build out its urgent care footprint, most recently with a facility on the other side of town.

The health system last week opened an urgent care center in the East End Medical Office Building across from its Richmond Community Hospital. The 3,800-square-foot clinic has eight treatment rooms and on-site x-ray and lab facilities. The center is intended to handle minor injuries and illnesses such as sprains, ear infections, strep throat, flu and urinary tract infections.

Bon Secours also has urgent care centers at 14163 Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield and at 11201 Nuckols Road, 1502 N. Parham Road and 9851 Brook Road in Henrico. The health system intends to open more clinics in the coming months, per a news release.
