The franchise group behind local Planet Fitness locations continues to bulk up its presence in the area with plans for a new gym in western Henrico.
Grand Fitness Partners is planning to open a 19,000-square-foot Planet Fitness in the retail center occupied by Burlington, Office Max and Aldi at the corner of Broad Street and Horsepen Road.
The franchisee is subleasing a portion of the 75,000-square-foot Burlington space at 6303 W. Broad St. for the gym, according to Thalhimer’s Jim Ashby, who handled the deal for Grand Fitness along with Nicki Jassy.
Burlington will continue to operate at the center, where its footprint had previously been reduced with the construction of the Aldi grocery store nearly a decade ago. The center also has a vacant outparcel that was previously home to an O’Charley’s restaurant.
Work on the buildout for the Planet Fitness was underway this week. Hash Construction is the general contractor, per a building permit.
The gym is anticipated to open in December, according to a release distributed Wednesday.
The gym will have a functional training room, locker rooms with showers, and cardio and strength equipment, among other features. Thalhimer announced the deal on Tuesday.
The upcoming gym comes as Grand Fitness is planning to open a new Chesterfield location in the Meadowdale Plaza shopping center. That gym is expected to open early next year.
The Planet Fitness franchisee, which entered the Richmond market by way of a multi-gym acquisition deal in 2021, operates 75 gyms in Virginia, New Jersey, Florida and California.
Locally, Grand Fitness operates the Planet Fitness locations at 4951 Nine Mile Road and 9703 W. Broad St. in Henrico, 11001 Hull Street Road in Chesterfield and 230 Southpark Circle in Colonial Heights. Those locations were purchased as part of the 2021 deal.
Grand Fitness has since opened Planet Fitness gyms at 7297 Battle Hill Drive in Mechanicsville and at 3000 Stony Point Road in South Richmond.
Note: This story has been updated with opening targets for the Broad-Horsepen and Meadowdale Plaza locations.
