As it prepares to move into its new Chesterfield HQ, engineering firm Timmons Group is expanding its office footprint with new outposts in Southwest Virginia and the Palmetto State.

The 72-year-old firm announced this month it is opening an office in Charleston, South Carolina. And next month, it is opening a location in Roanoke, its first in Southwest Virginia.

The moves follow Timmons’ increased activity in South Carolina, where it opened an office in Columbia last year and had been operating out of North Carolina offices in Charlotte and Wilmington, where it expanded in 2021.

The firm also has upped its workload in and around Roanoke, where it’s had a hand in a road project at Roanoke Airport, the Smith Ridge Commons housing community and master planning for a new skate park.

It’s also been active in Salem, Covington and Franklin County, as well as Virginia Tech, where many Timmons employees went to college, including CEO Brian Bortell.

“A lot of our folks here went to school out in Blacksburg, so we’re excited about that,” Bortell said. “We’re doing a lot more work in Southwest Virginia these days than we used to be, both with universities as well as just private land development projects that are going on.”

The Roanoke office will be located at 109 Norfolk Ave., near the Virginia Museum of Transportation and The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center. The office will be led by Craig Kotarski, who also manages Timmons’ Charlottesville office.

The Charleston office, led by Brian Crutchfield, is at 1859 Summerville Ave. in the port city’s downtown business area. Bortell said the office will start with three or four employees and grow over the next six months. He said recruitment was a consideration with the location.

“We feel like Charleston is a super-attractive area to our employees – we’ve got a number of employees that are interested in going there – as well as it’s really a growing area, so we feel like that’s a good place for us to be.”

The new outposts bring Timmons’ total office count to about 20, most of them in the mid-Atlantic region. The company’s footprint extends as far north as Baltimore, where it expanded in 2017. It also has an outlier in Dallas, where it planted its flag a year later.

Of the Charleston office, Bortell said, “I think it really plays in line for us as part of our overall geographic expansion southward, as we’ve just seen the overall population moving more from the Northeast to the Southeast. I think you’ll see that we’ll continue to move down in that direction.”

Having done both public and private work in and around Charleston, Bortell added, “It really was just a natural extension for us to get some people there on the ground full-time. We wanted to have more of a local presence there, to be part of the community and get people involved, and it’s been very popular with our current employees as well as attracting new employees.”

The Charleston office is the firm’s second in South Carolina.

Companywide, Timmons has about 1,200 employees, with about 500 of those based in metro Richmond. The company headquarters is in Chesterfield, where it’s in the process of moving from its longtime home in the Boulders Office Park to a new building at Springline at District 60, the mixed-use redevelopment of the old Spring Rock Green shopping center site at Midlothian Turnpike and Chippenham Parkway.

Bortell said the move should be completed by the end of this month to the new five-story, 150,000-square-foot office building, which Timmons built. It is leasing the other half of the building to Chesterfield County for offices for the school district’s administrators.

“We’ve been in this space here in the Boulders for 20 years now, so we’ve got a little cleaning up to do to move a half a mile away, but we’re very excited about that,” Bortell said. “I think there’s a general sense of excitement here to get into a new space, spend the next 20 years over there and see how that goes.”

Timmons joins other locally based companies making moves in the Carolinas. Last month, residential builder and developer HHHunt announced an expansion to Wilmington after securing approvals for an apartment development.

Last fall, Timmons added to its local staff count with its acquisition of Dutton + Associates.
