A local restaurant group is looking to three-peat with their sports bar concept with an expansion into Short Pump.
The owners of Wood & Iron Gameday have signed a lease to open a third location, this time at 12120 W. Broad St. in West Broad Marketplace.
Owners Steve Rogge and Kevin McGrath confirmed the deal this week.
The Midlothian natives opened their first restaurant, The Flyin’ Pig, in Chesterfield in 2012. They introduced the Wood & Iron concept to Midlothian in 2016, then added a location in Scott’s Addition in 2020. The duo also owned Asado, which was open near VCU from 2014 to 2020.
The West Broad Marketplace outpost will be located near Skechers and marks the duo’s first foray into Henrico County, though Rogge said they’d always had Short Pump on their radar.
“We really liked the location and the opportunity there. We’ve been looking at Short Pump for a little while now,” Rogge said.
Wood & Iron’s menu features plenty of bar classics like cheeseburgers, wings and tacos, as well as some twists like cheesesteak egg rolls and a fried goat cheese salad. Rogge said they recently had an acquaintance describe Wood & Iron as a “polished sports bar.”
“We kind of like that feel to it. We try to do things a little bit nicer than a majority are doing right now,” Rogge said.
Added McGrath, “We like the idea of it being an everyday concept, just, in our opinion, done right.”
The Short Pump location’s menu will mirror that of Midlothian and Scott’s Addition. At about 6,500 square feet, the location will also be a similar size to the other Wood & Irons, and it will also include an outdoor patio. Rogge estimates it’ll have seating for around 235 people.
Wood & Iron finalized its lease this week, with Thalhimer’s Annie O’Connor representing them in the deal.
McGrath said the building they’re going into is a blank shell and that they hope to be open in the next nine months to a year.
With two locations running strong and a third on the way, McGrath said they’re not ruling out future expansion of the Wood & Iron brand.
“We’re going to keep our focus on this location now,” he said. “But if all goes well it’d be hard to say no (to more).”
Rogge and McGrath are the second local restaurant group to jump into West Broad Marketplace. Last year couple Mike Lindsey and Kimberly Love-Lindsey opened their fried chicken concept, Buttermilk and Honey, in the development.

Good work Kevin McGrath, proud of you and love them wings at wood & iron.
Yesssss! I lived in Chesterfield briefly and their smoked wings are the best around. Excited to have them in Short Pump.
Congratulations to you both. This is exactly what short pump needs.
Been trying to get ahold of you for some other projects. Shoot me an email when you have a chance.
Short Pump is fine, but man we need something closer in. This sounds awesome! Bring us another one!
They are also in Scott’s Addition and on Huguenot at Bellgrade.
In addition to the Flyin’ Pig 13560 Waterford Pl, Midlothian, VA 23112, they have two Wood and Iron locations at Huguenot at Bellgrade (MIDLOTHIAN) 11400 W. Huguenot Rd., #109B Midlothian, VA. 23113 and in SCOTT’S ADDITION 1405 Roseneath Rd Richmond, VA 23230
I hope they don’t lose focus. Wood and Iron SA is so good for what it is. Quality food, quality drinks, fair prices.
But often overexpansion kills everything. It’s a frequent Richmond story.
Any word on if this Short Pump location is still in the works? We’ve been holding out hope. We gladly make the drive to the south side but are sure hoping W&I makes it out west!
