A DHL Supply Chain subsidiary’s move to trim its workforce includes the closure of a warehouse in Henrico County.
Delivery company Genesis Logistics Inc. plans to shutter its facility at 6601 S. Laburnum Ave. on Feb. 12, according to a notice the company recently filed with the Virginia Employment Commission.
As part of that closure, the company intends to lay off 35 employees the same day. The workers affected are primarily drivers, in addition to some in managerial roles.
Genesis is a subsidiary of German logistics company DHL and the closing of the Henrico warehouse and layoffs comes as the result of an unnamed convenience store client’s changing needs, according to DHL spokeswoman Glennah Ivey-Walker.
Additionally, Genesis planned to close a warehouse near Alexandria and lay off 86 employees there in mid-January, according to a separate notice submitted to the state.
“Genesis Logistics handles warehousing and deliveries for several DHL Supply Chain customers in the convenience store industry,” Ivey-Walker said in an email this month. “These closures are being driven by a customer’s decision to restructure their supply chain strategy to better support the needs of their business.”
The company’s Henrico facility is located in part of the 168,000-square-foot building that fronts Laburnum Avenue, which is part of the Airport Distribution Center complex in Varina. Atlanta-based MDH Partners owns the building, per Henrico property records. The building is split among tenants. Genesis has leased space there since at least 2009.
Indiana-based Becknell Industrial sold other buildings in the center to New York-based Raith Capital Partners in 2021.
The DHL subsidiary isn’t the same firm as the Illinois-based logistics company of a similar name, according to that company’s COO.
