The Japanese beer giant that bought Stone Brewing Co. last year is bolstering its Richmond-area presence.
Sapporo USA has leased 149,000 square feet of industrial space in the Sauer Industrial Center, a warehouse development taking shape on 450 acres just south of Richmond International Airport in eastern Henrico.
The brewing conglomerate, which spent $168 million last year to acquire San Diego-based Stone Brewing, will take the majority of a new 279,000-square-foot industrial building at 943 S. Airport Dr.
Sean Monahan, COO for Stone and Sapporo USA, said the additional square footage will allow the company to repurpose some warehouse space at Stone’s Fulton brewery at 4300 Williamsburg Ave.
“With plans to more than double production over the coming years, we need additional space to support the growth of inbound raw materials and outbound beer for Stone and Sapporo brands,” Monahan said in an email.
That growth in Fulton will include the need for a new canning line and additional brewing tanks.
Monahan said that the company is planning to hire 15 to 20 more people to help run the new warehouse, and that this year it anticipates the size of its Richmond-area staff to roughly double from 75 to around 150.
Sapporo is set to move into the new industrial space in the spring.
Porter Realty’s Cliff Porter represented the landlord in the deal. Colliers International’s Matt Anderson, Wood Thornton and Todd Steffen represented Sapporo.
Local firm Sauer Properties and Indiana-based Becknell Industrial are leading the development of Sauer Industrial Center. Work got underway in 2021, with plans ultimately to build 3.3 million square feet of Class A industrial space.
Sapporo’s building is owned by Becknell and sits just north of a new, 447,000-square-foot warehouse occupied by Mondelēz International, a cookie and cracker manufacturer that has a sizable footprint in eastern Henrico. County records show that Becknell sold Mondelēz’s building last year to Boston-based Intercontinental Real Estate Corp. for $67.5 million.
Mondelēz and Sapporo are the first two confirmed tenants at the Sauer Industrial Center.
Sauer Properties still owns more than 300 acres at the development site, most of which is on the western side of Airport Drive. Sauer President Ashley Peace said the company is hoping to start construction on some major road infrastructure on the western side soon.
