A long-planned retail project appears to be moving forward, and bringing with it the first standalone Starbucks in Goochland County.
The Seattle coffee giant plans to open a new location as part of the upcoming Oak Hill East Shopping Center project near Patterson Avenue’s interchange with Route 288, according to building permits filed with the county.
Local developer the Pruitt Cos. is behind Oak Hill East, which has been in the works since at least 2019 and is part of a larger project to redevelop more than 70 acres to the east of the former Oak Hill Golf Course.
The 40,000-square-foot center will consist of two 1-story buildings and a single two-story building on a 6-acre site, according to a site plan. Building permits were filed with Goochland for two of the buildings in late August.
Starbucks is first tenant to be publicly disclosed. The permits do not identify any other future tenants at the center. Pruitt Cos. declined to comment for this story. The center hadn’t broken ground as of last week.

The retail center will be built on land between Patterson Avenue and The Collective at West Creek, a 335-unit apartment complex that was built by Tennessee-based Bristol Development Group and was previously referred to as Bristol Apartments at Oak Hill.
The redevelopment area represents the southernmost reaches of West Creek Business Park, which is also co-owned by the Pruitts.
The new Starbucks is anticipated to open in fall 2024, according to an email from a Starbucks spokesperson last week.
Starbucks doesn’t currently have any standalone coffee shops in Goochland, per the company’s website. The chain does have a presence inside the nearby Capital One offices at West Creek.
Starbucks is also planning a new location in a former bank branch on Broad Street in Henrico County. That cafe is scheduled to open in summer 2024. The company also recently opened a new location at the River Road Shopping Center in Henrico.
The Starbucks expansion in Goochland comes in the wake of Chick-fil-A’s first foray into the county. In June, the fast-food chain opened an outpost on Broad Street Road just outside Short Pump.
Just east of the Chick-fil-A, there’s also a new Honda dealership in the works from an Ohio-based auto dealer.

Woops, we forgot to mention the new Starbucks coming to the Henrico/New Kent line on Rt. 60 (Bottoms Bridge). Opening before the end of 2023.
