Do the Fortune 500 shuffle

numberoneAnd then there was six.

The latest Fortune 500 rankings have been released; the same local companies that made the list last year are back with one notable exception: Circuit City.

In 2009, Circuit City was ranked 228 on the Fortune 500 list with revenue of $11.74 billion.

Five of the six local companies that made this year’s list moved up in the rankings from last year:

Altria Group moved to 137 from 160.

Dominion Resources moved to 153 from 157.

Genworth Financial moved to 257 from 271.

Owens & Minor moved to 283 from 339.

MeadWestvaco moved to 357 from 365.

Carmax made the list again but moved down to position 323 from number 311 the year before.

Fortune 500 rankings are based on revenue from the previous year. Collectively the six Richmond companies on the 2010 list brought in about $61.9 billion. That is $14.5 billion less than those companies on the 2009 list.. If you omit Circuit City’s revenue from that, the difference is $2.8 billion.

Richmond Fortune 500 companies also made less profit last year. The combined profit for companies on this year’s list was $4.9 billion, compared to $7.82 billion the year before. If you ignore Circuit City again (which lost $320 million in 2008), the difference is $3.24 billion.

Genworth Financial is the only one of the group to lose money two years in a row, $460 million last year and $572 million the year before.

The top five companies nationally in order are Wal-Mart, Exxon-Mobil, Chevron, General Electric and Bank of America.
