Charlottesville charter service landing in Richmond

A Charlottesville charter flight company will be flying into Richmond soon.

Meridian Air Group, a company based at the Charlottesville-Albermale Airport, plans to have a presence in Richmond.

Meridian specializes in charter flights, aircraft management, fixed-base operation services and maintenance.

The company recently ran a print ad in Style, and an employee confirmed on the phone that they are coming to the Richmond area. Executives with the company could not be reached by press time.

The company was founded in 1997 and started out with two employees who conducted unscheduled, on-demand aircraft charters for the public. In 2006, they opened a satellite location at the Louisa County Airport to operate their fixed-base services.

Meridian will compete with at least three other charter airline companies in the area: Dominion Aviation, which is based at Chesterfield County Airport, Martin Air, based at Richmond International Airport, and Million Air, which also flies out of RIC.

Sales of private charters  were up 6.3% in November and 4.4% in December, compared to year-earlier sales those months, the Wall Street Journal recently reported.
