VCU students just snagged some snazzy new digs.
A 285,000 square foot student housing complex at 8 ½ Canal Street was just opened to students two weeks ago.
Construction on the eight story building was finished up last month by Gilbane Development Company and will be the newest housing option for the area.
The complex has 160 apartments and houses 540 students. It sits near the VCU BrandCenter and close to the business and engineering schools.
Bob Gilane, CEO of Gilbane Development Company, said they were looking to combat the demand for more student housing.
“We felt there was a real need,” he said. “As opposed to just scattering students throughout different neighborhoods it made more sense to have them in a nice facility adjacent to campus.”
The 1.07-acre site was previously owned by Kanawha Company LC who purchased it in 2004 for $1.9 million from Schnabel Real Estates.
The complex features include a 24-hour fitness center, cyber café, and gaming center.
