A Short Pump pet food supplier is marking its territory in the West End.
Ginger’s Eatz & Treatz, a three-year-old natural pet food shop, this month opened its second store in Richmond at 8931 Patterson Ave.
Owner John Dickerson said that the expansion has been in the works for about a year and that he decided to move forward when a 1,700-square-foot space opened up near Richmond’s Alpha Dog Club, a dog rehab and workout facility.
“I’ve always had the idea to duplicate the store in other markets,” Dickerson said. “When this opportunity came up, I thought the two businesses would make a good fit.”
Dickerson launched the first shop in 2009 at 3426 Pump Road after 18 years in the insurance industry.
Ginger’s carries a mix of natural food and treats for dogs and cats, including brands such as Annamaet and Verus.
“Our job is to get the best food and treats out there and bring them into Richmond,” he said.
Dickerson said investing in higher quality food could save money in vet bills later on in a pet’s life.
“If you have a dog or a cat that’s always scratching and ripping its hair out, that could be a food allergy,” Dickerson said. “Our employees are trained to figure out what’s causing it and find a food that can help.”
The new shop will also stock professional-grade leashes and training equipment geared toward customers on the pet-show circuit and a self-serve washing station.
The new store is the latest development in a run of good news for the Richmond pet supply industry: Dog chew retailer Best Bully Sticks last week announced a move to a new headquarters, its second expansion in two years.

I have been getting supplies at Ginger’s for the last year. I can tell you that switching my buddies food to Annamaet at the recommendation of one of the staff members has been wonderrful for my dogs health:) no more itchy paws and hair loss.
Wonderful Place..Cant wait to visit the new location.
My kitties love the treats from Ginger’s. I also like that they have “Beastie Bands” collars, so I can dress them up with a collar just for the season or holiday. I know it caters more to dogs, but there are great things for cats, like treats that help keep hips strong.
