Small-scale distilleries and craft breweries will now be able to set up shop in more places around the city.
A change to a city ordinance that allows malt beverage manufacturers to operate in the city’s light industrial districts got the green light Monday from the Richmond City Council.
That means distilleries and breweries can open in spots such as Scott’s Addition and parts of Manchester. Eligible distilleries will have to produce fewer than 250,000 cases of liquor a year, and breweries will have to produce fewer than 100,000 barrels a year.
Before the council approved the change, breweries and distilleries weren’t on the list of permitted industries in those districts.
The change passed unanimously without any discussion from the council. The planning commission adopted the change last week.
Richmond planning director Mark Olinger said the commission started discussing the change internally several months ago in light of the rise of breweries in the area.
The change will take effect immediately.
