Remnants of the house that Twinkies built are up for grabs in the West End.
A former Hostess and Wonder Bread outlet store and warehouse property is for sale as part of the bankruptcy of Hostess Brands. The company filed bankruptcy in 2012, and its various assets, including its snack brands, real estate, vehicles, intellectual property and the like have been put up for sale.
Its property at 7301 Staples Mill Road is for sale through Hilco Real Estate, the firm handling the unloading of Hostess assets.
The 16,000-square-foot property sits on one acre and was most recently assessed by Henrico County at $590,000.
About a dozen Hostess and Wonder Bread delivery trucks also sit idle on the property, which is on the edge of Dumbarton Square Shopping Center, near the intersection of Hilliard and Staples Mill roads.
The Staples Mill location is the only local parcel affected by the bankruptcy. Hilco has listings of Hostess properties across Virginia, including at 12827 Jefferson Ave. in Newport News, 1323 Powhatan St. in Fredericksburg and 1432 22nd St. in Chesapeake.
As for the future of Twinkies, the rights to the famous yellow sponge cake and its sister snacks were acquired in March by two investments firms. The deal was worth about $410 million.
