A diverse set of 23 Richmond area businesses were named this week among the 5,000 fastest growing companies in the U.S.

The annual Inc. 500 and Inc. 5000 lists were released Tuesday ranking firms’ revenue growth over a period from 2009 through 2012.

Top on the list locally was Genesis Consulting Partners, a local IT firm that boasted a 1,601 percent increase in revenue during the three year period and snagged the 272nd spot on Inc.’s list. Its total revenue in 2012 was $12.2 million.

Genesis was the only Richmond company with four-digit revenue growth from 2010 to 2012.

At 1,816 on the list, local trucking company Estes Forwarding Worldwide far outpaced the rest of the Richmond pack in total revenue last year with $103.6 million. That marked a jump from $89.3 million in 2011.

Fifteen of the 23 Richmond firms on this year’s list were back for the second year in a row. Four of those moved up in the rankings. Twenty-eight local companies made it last year.

Richmond had only two companies (Genesis Consulting, Cornerstone RPO) among this year’s more coveted Inc. 500, which recognizes the 500 fastest growing companies in the nation. That’s compared with four last year.

Annual revenue jumps were seen at 12 of the 15 returning companies from 2011 to 2012. TDBBS, better known as local dog treat maker Best Bully Sticks, saw its revenue leap to $18.3 million in 2012, up from $11.1 million.

IT services firm CapTech reported an annual revenue increase of nearly $20 million between 2011 and 2012, to $69.1 million.

In addition to Genesis Consulting, Richmond newcomers on the list include: Carytown retailer Need Supply Co.; drink maker 4U2U Brands; Stockner’s Nursery in Rockville; A/V installer Livewire; Chester-based Flagstop Car Wash and Quick Lube; Glen Allen tech firm Dominion Digital; and Ball Office Products.

The Inc. list is not exhaustive in identifying all the area’s fastest growing firms (entries are voluntary), and includes only privately held companies with minimum 2009 revenue of $100,000 and $2 million in 2012.

Here’s a full look at the local firms on the list, according to Inc.:
