Richmond’s biggest private school has a new leader.

Collegiate School’s board of trustees has tapped Stephen Hickman to take over as head of school beginning in July 2014. Hickman is currently head of Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock, Ark., and will replace longtime Collegiate Head of School Keith Evans.
Collegiate “offers a unique professional opportunity — it’s long enjoyed the reputation as being one of our nation’s finest independent schools,” Hickman said. “I think what was very attractive is that it is known for a vibrant, forward-thinking, student-centered learning environment.”
Hickman, a Memphis native, will come to Collegiate after spending five years at Episcopal Collegiate. He previously served as head of school at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, S.C., and as assistant headmaster of Lakeview Academy in Gainesville, Ga.
Collegiate also offered a “compelling personal opportunity,” Hickman said. His wife is a Richmond native, and both of Hickman’s sons were born in the city.
“Richmond, to us, is like coming back home,” he said.

Evans is leaving Collegiate at the end of the current school year to take over as president of Westminster Schools in Atlanta. He has held the title “head of school” at Collegiate since 1999. Hickman said his top priorities will be to continue to implement the plans left by his predecessor.
With more than 1,600 students, Collegiate topped Richmond BizSense’s Private Schools List in 2012. High school tuition at the West End private school is $22,170 for the current school year.
Another local private school is looking for a new leader: The Steward School announced this week that headmaster Kenneth H. Seward had departed effective Nov. 30.
