The health-care industry is fueling more development in Mechanicsville.
Hanover Emergency Center, a $10 million freestanding emergency center, is scheduled to open in May or June in Rutland Commons, and KidMed, an after-hours urgent care facility for children and young adults, hopes to open in April on Bell Creek Road.
Hanover Emergency Center’s 22,000-square-foot facility is being built on a 2.8-acre plot next to Bojangles’ on Atlee Road in the Rutland development.
“The location was picked because the population there is expanding and growing, both residential and commercial,” said Lee Van Sise, director of the new facility.
The center is a department of Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, owned by publicly-traded hospital giant HCA. It’s the company’s second freestanding emergency center in the area. The other is West Creek Emergency Center in Goochland County.
Like a hospital emergency room, Hanover Emergency Center will be fully staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Thirty to 50 employees will be hired to work there.
DPR is the general contractor, and Gresham Smith and Partners was hired as architect.
About five miles southeast, KidMed is using Commonwealth Construction of Richmond to build its 6,500-square-foot facility 8356 Bell Creek Road.
Spokesperson Kathy Green said the company signed a 15-year lease with property owner Seven Hills Group. Russell Wyatt, a broker with Commonwealth Commercial Partners, was the leasing agent.
Green said the Mechanicsville facility will be KidMed’s third location. Others are at 4687 Pouncey Tract Road in Glen Allen and at 5021 Craig Rath Blvd. in Midlothian.
The company expects to hire 10 full-time employees, although some employees, such as doctors, shuffle among locations. It accepts patients ranging in age from newborn to 22 years.
Green said demand from parents of patients drew the organization to Mechanicsville.
The company was founded in 2009 and is owned by three pediatricians: Jeff Bennett, Mark Flanzenbaum and Lisa Chestnut.
