There’s a new way to measure generosity in Richmond.
Richmond BizSense is pleased to introduce our newest List and event combination — Generosity Inc.: RVA’s Top Corporate Donors.
Generosity Inc. will identify and celebrate businesses in our region that contributed the most money to charitable organizations in 2013.
This objective ranking will be published in a list on June 3. Later that month, BizSense and our sponsors will host a celebration of the top firms from the list at an evening event filled with great networking, food and drink.
Throughout the month of May, BizSense will survey businesses in the area to find the biggest givers: Both locally based and out-of-town firms with local operations are eligible to participate. (Please click here to fill out the survey.)
Rankings will be calculated by the total amount given to local charities, foundations and other nonprofit causes in 2013. And the final list will be open to all readers and include all firms that fill it out. We know from our reporting that local nonprofits play a major role in the economy. And now we will quantify how companies operating here fuel all those good works.

The top 25 companies on the list will then be recognized at the evening event and presented with an engraved plaque as the inaugural members of the first class of Generosity Inc. (We still have a few sponsorships slots left).
Make sure your firm is in the running. The deadline for Generosity Inc. submissions is May 27.

Great to see more publicity on corporate philanthropy and social entrepreneurship, which are alive and well in RVA, but local nonprofits should not focus too much hope and effort on soliciting corporate donations–surveys consistently show that the overwhelming majority of your revenue will likely come from individual donors (and don’t forget that Virginia, like most states, regulates the solicitation of charitable donations).
