As an array of new shops is arriving at Short Pump Town Center, one store at the mall is set to close its doors as part of a nationwide liquidation.
Coldwater Creek, a women’s fashion store, is undergoing bankruptcy liquidation and closing its 330 locations nationwide, including its store at Short Pump and another at the Chesterfield Towne Center.
But Coldwater Creek, which has been at Short Pump since 2003, is the exception to a pattern of new arrivals to the mall.
In February, the owners of the shopping center announced renovation plans to add new structural features along with a fresh crop of retailers. Several of the stores will be new to Richmond, and most are set to open this summer.
Soft Surroundings plans to have its Short Pump location open in August near Dick’s Sporting Goods. The furnishing and women’s fashion store signed a 10-year lease in April for the 4,700-square-foot space, its first in Virginia.
“Richmond has always been on our radar,” said Danny Boddy, Soft Surroundings vice president of retail. “We felt like Short Pump was the perfect fit for our demographic, and we know where our customers shop.”
The St. Louis-based retailer has 12 stores across the country. Boddy said the company plans to have six more stores open by the end of this year and 10 more in 2015.
Versona Accessories, also a women’s fashion store, is opening on June 26 near Dillard’s. The only other Virginia Versona is in Newport News. The brand has 43 stores across the country, according to its website.
Versona is part of the Cato Corp., a publicly traded company that also operates the stores It’s Fashion, It’s Fashion Metro and Cato.
Free People, a women’s fashion brand owned by Urban Outfitters Inc., plans to open June 27 in 2,900 square feet. The store will be the company’s 96th globally and the first in the Richmond area.
Out of Knoxville, Tenn., clothing store Altar’d State is expected to open next month in the mall between New York & Co. and Teavana. It’ll be its first in Richmond.
As those stores prepare to open, construction is underway on a new elevator and a walkway spanning the mall’s main plaza. Additional landscaping and a communal fireplace are also in the works. All renovations are expected to be completed before the winter holidays.
Of the 15 new tenants announced as part of the renovations in February, eight have opened recently: American Eagle Outfitters and Aerie, Athleta, Gymboree, Justice and Brothers, kate spade new york, Oakley, Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery and Vans.
Others that are on their way include Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants, Madewell, Michael Kors, True Religion and TUMI.
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported that Altar’d State is opening just outside the mall at 13991 N. Gayton Road. It is in fact opening inside the mall. The company is using the Gayton Road address as a temporary site for job interviews.
