With the cut of an oversized pair of scissors, a rapidly growing Richmond company christened the completion of its new headquarters complex.
Health Diagnostic Laboratories on Friday unveiled the 95,000-square-foot second phase of its $100 million home in the Virginia Biotechnology Park.
The 5-year-old company now occupies about 283,000 square feet between two buildings near the corner of Jackson and 5th streets.
Sen. Mark Warner, Reps. Eric Cantor and Bobby Scott and Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones attended HDL’s ribbon cutting, which marked the end of construction started in 2012.
Work on the 112,000-square-foot first phase of the headquarters started in early 2012. HDL announced the second phase late that same year.
The first building was completed in spring 2013 and construction on the second piece was finished this April. HDL spent about $80 million on construction and another $20 million on equipment upgrades.
The Lingerfelt Companies developed HDL’s new complex.
The campus houses HDL’s office space as well as several of its laboratories, a gym and a cafeteria. The new building’s upper levels also have a slide.
HDL still occupies the 76,000-square-foot BioTech 8 building, which sits on the same block as its new headquarters.
HDL’s main work is a blood test and health consultancy service that shows a person’s risk for certain diseases. HDL does most of its business through physician referrals, but more recently has added employer-based and direct-to-consumer testing programs.
CEO Tonya Mallory, who co-founded HDL in 2009, said the firm’s original 5-year plan called for a 10,000-square-foot lab and about 75 employees. HDL has about 800 full-time employees, with 700 in the Richmond area.
“We’ve had much higher demand than we anticipated,” Mallory said Friday. “And the incidence of chronic disease has grown to epic proportions, which has forced us to grow so quickly.”

Congratulations to HDL and Tonya Mallory on their continued success! It has been exciting to watch the amazing growth and expansion of a company that has invested so much in Richmond and its community.
