Hanover County’s first free-standing emergency room is ready for action.
Hanover Emergency Center, a 22,000-square-foot facility to be open around the clock, opened for business Monday. It is located at the intersection of U.S. 301 and Atlee Road in Mechanicsville, near Bojangles in Rutland Commons.
The $10 million center is a department of Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, owned by publicly-traded hospital giant HCA.
“We can do everything other ERs are doing,” said Carolyn Edwards, the center’s clinical coordinator for nursing. “We’re a full-service emergency room. We just don’t have the hospital attached.”
The emergency center has the tools for everything from stitching up a simple cut to stabilizing a gunshot patient for transfer to a trauma center. Edwards said they also keep donated blood on hand.

The emergency center has 12 exam rooms and a triage room and has the equipment for lab tests, CT scans, ultrasounds, digital x-rays, 3D mammography and bone density screenings. It has a negative pressure room for patients with airborne illnesses, a decontamination area and a lockdown room for psychiatric patients who may be dangerous to themselves or others.
DPR was the general contractor for the facility, and Gresham Smith and Partners was the architect.
It’s HCA’s second freestanding emergency center in the area. The other is West Creek Emergency Center in Goochland County.
Mechanicsville continues to grow on the healthcare front. This spring, KidMed opened an after-hours urgent care facility for children and young adults on Bell Creek Road.
Richmond Pediatrics will move its current Mechanicsville office about three miles away in September to a new space just down the street from KidMed. The building, at the intersection of Bell Creek Road and Right Flank Road, is currently under construction.
