There’s a new big man on campus at one of Richmond’s largest private schools.
Stephen Hickman officially began his new role as head of Collegiate School on Tuesday.
The Memphis, Tenn., native replaces longtime Collegiate School head Keith Evans, who stepped down at the end of the school year to become president of Westminster Schools in Atlanta.
Hickman was most recently head of Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock, Ark., according to a press release.
He said he made the move because of Collegiate’s reputation and because his wife is from Richmond.
“Certainly there was a family component in the decision,” Hickman said. “We’re very familiar with Richmond and visit often, and we lived here for two years in the early ‘90s.”
Before moving to Little Rock, Hickman was head of school at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, S.C., and assistant headmaster of Lakeview Academy in Gainesville, Ga., the press release said.
He has degrees from Loyola, George Mason, Johns Hopkins and Brenau universities.
Hickman said he now has to get to know Collegiate.
“In the next few months, I’ll be doing a lot of listening, a lot of learning,” he said.
Collegiate School students head back to class on Aug. 26.
The North Mooreland Road school topped Richmond BizSense’s annual ranking of private schools with an enrollment of 1,600 students for the 2013-14 school year.
The Steward School, in western Henrico County, continues its search for a new headmaster. Headmaster Kenneth Seward stepped down Nov. 30.
